About the Webinar
Department of Architecture and Planning, MA-NIT, Bhopal, in association with COA-TRC, Bhopal are jointly organizing a Webinar 1.0 on “NEP 2020 and Traditional Knowledge in Architecture and Planning: Opportunities and Challenges”.
India has a rich tradition of architecture and planning since prehistoric times of Harappan civilization. Built examples as well as theoretical works are proof of this living heritage. In literature, this knowledge is referred to as vastushastra, staphatya, shilpashastra and other terms. To give it a distinct identity, it can be termed as ‘Indian system of architecture’. The Indian system of architecture encompasses the fields of planning, architecture, interiors including iconography and sculpture as well as vehicle design. It also covers building material properties and construction techniques among other themes.
Since the early modern era, numerous scholars have contributed to this knowledge base and work is being carried out even now. However, in our curriculum, we study only a small part of this knowledge base, primarily due to lack of readily available literature and shortage of resource persons. The National Education Policy 2020 has given us an opportunity to address this task with reinvigorated efforts. This would not only enrich our knowledge but also give us an opportunity to apply the same in designs in present times.
