About the Fellowship
J-PAL South Asia Country India Education Requirement Masters’ Degree Language Requirement English Length of Commitment One Year Start Date March 2021 This pre-doctoral fellowship, sponsored by J-PAL South Asia’s Cash Transfers for Child Health (CaTCH) initiative, has been created to help synthesize and disseminate evidence on the role of cash transfer and pay-for-peformance programmes for improving child health outcomes generated through the CaTCH initiative.
The fellowship can lead to the writing of a meta-analysis and review papers on cash transfer evidence. This fellowship is designed to help the selected candidate gain experience on evidence synthesis, meta-analysis and data publication in preparation for applications to graduate programmes.
Roles & Responsibilities
The primary responsibility of the predoctoral fellow will be to help synthesize and disseminate the results and policy lessons from evaluations funded by the CaTCH initiative to the research community, policymakers, funding organisations, and practitioners. The Pre-Doc will also be expected to provide support to full evaluations funded by CaTCH in preparing their datasets for publication. The selected candidate will dual-report directly to Pascaline Dupas, Professor of Economics at Stanford University, and Seema Jayachandran, Professor of Economics at Stanford University.
Fellowship responsibilities include:
- Work with CaTCH funded full evaluations to see that certain common indicators across studies are being measured in a standard format
- Author an article that synthesizes the evidence generated by the various CaTCH projects, including meta-analysis and comparative cost-effectiveness analyses
- Support researchers in the archiving of all CaTCH related data (survey and administrative data) in the public domain
- Ensuring that CaTCH-related projects adhere to data publication and transparency procedures
- Writing high quality project reports and policy memos for government partners and donors
- Support the CaTCH initiative co-chairs and staff in dissemination of findings from initiative funded projects, where required.
- Support and participate J-PAL South Asia policy and capacity-building activities.
- Contributing to other initiative related activities, as needed
Qualifications
The fellowship is open to candidates who have completed a Masters in Economics, Public Policy or a related field, with a focus on quantitative research methods. Prior experience in health research (or human development broadly defined) in developing countries and impact evaluation (demonstrated by coursework, professional experience, and/or collaborative research activities) is preferred. Significant applied econometrics skills are expected.
Additional factors that will favorably influence selection include:
(a) experience in evidence synthesis and reviews of randomized evaluations
(b) evidence of independently managing complex projects with multiple stake holders
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience in managerial or technical positions.
- Preference will be given to candidates with work experience in India or other South Asian countries.
Location
J-PAL South Asia staff are currently working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The position will be remote till work-from-home guidelines are in place, however, the candidate will be based in New Delhi once offices reopen.
