The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Tirupati invites applications from prospective candidates for admission to the Ph.D. program, January 2021.

IISER Tirupati admits students in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and associated interdisciplinary areas of research. In addition to research, the program involves coursework and teaching assistantship.

Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Tirupati commonly referred to as IISER Tirupati, is a public research and education institute in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, India. It has been established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, in order to promote Higher Scientific Learning and Research as well as Scientific Exploration at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels of education and to create Scientists and Academicians of the highest quality. IISERs are destined to become Science Institutions of the highest caliber and reach the prestigious position and global setting that IISc, IITs, and IIMs currently enjoy.

Research Areas

• Chemistry: Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Theoretical & Computational Chemistry, Physical & Materials Chemistry, Chemical biology, and other Chemistry allied disciplines.
• Physics: Plant Biology, Developmental and Stem Cell Biology, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, Biophysics and Biomolecular Spectroscopy, Neurobiology, Infection Biology, Molecular Microbiology, Cancer Biology, Immunology, Genome Biology, Chemical Biology, Ecology, and Evolutionary biology.
• Biology: Astronomy & Astrophysics, Data Science as applied to Astronomy and Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Theory and Experiment, Atomic & Molecular Physics, Complex systems, Organic Opto-electronics, Soft and Active Matter, Microfluidics, Experimental High Energy Physics, Biophysics.

Eligibility Criteria

For Ph.D. in Chemistry

1. Students with minimum 55% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; with all subjects) or CGPA 6.0 on a 10-point scale in master’s degree in any branch of Science: Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics/Biology or ME/M.Tech or any equivalent degree OR,
2. Candidates with BE/ B.Tech degree with minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in majoring subject) or CGPA 6.5 on a 10-point scale can also apply.
3. IISER BS-MS (All IISERs) Dual degree students with CGPA >= 8.0 are eligible without the additional eligibility.
4. The candidate should have been GATE qualified (or) CSIR/ UGC-JRF or CSIR/UGC NET-LS (or) INSPIRE Ph.D.

For Ph.D. in Biology

1. Students with minimum 55% marks in aggregate (overall percentage including all subjects) or CGPA 6.0 on a 10-point scale in Master’s degree in any branch of Science Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ Biological Sciences/ Ecological Sciences/Agricultural Sciences/ Psychology M.Tech/ M.VSc or MBBS degree or any equivalent degree.
2. Candidates with BE/ B.Tech degree with minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage including all subjects) or CGPA 6.5 on a 10-point scale can also apply.
3. IISER BS-MS (All IISERs) Dual degree students with CGPA >= 8.0 are eligible without the additional eligibility.
4. The candidate should have qualified  JGEEBILS 2019 (or) DBT-JRF-A/ ICMR-JRF/ DBT-BINC/ ARS-NET (ICAR)/ UGC-CSIR JRF/ DST-INSPIRE (or) For CSIR-LS rank-holders, up to rank 200 are eligible (or) For DAE-JEST/GATE rank-holders, up to rank 100 for GATE (Life Sciences), up to rank 300 GATE (Ecology) are eligible.

For Ph.D. in Physics

1. Students with minimum 55% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in majoring subject) or CGPA 6.0 on a 10-point scale in Master’s degree in any branch of Science: Physics/ Astronomy & Astrophysics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ Biology or M.E/ M.Tech. or any equivalent degree OR,
2. Candidates with BE/ B.Tech degree with minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage; not only in majoring subject) or CGPA 6.5 on a 10-point scale can also apply, OR
3. IISER BS-MS (All IISERs) Dual degree students with CGPA >= 8.0 are eligible without the additional eligibility.
4. The candidate should have qualified Qualified in Physics CSIR/ UGC/ NET or JEST or GATE.

Candidates in the final year of their qualifying degree are also eligible to apply. However, their final selection is subject to their successful completion of the qualifying degree with the above-mentioned requirements at the time of admission. A provisional degree certificate is mandatory at the time of admission (tentatively scheduled to be 2nd January 2021).

Selection Criteria

The shortlisted candidates will be called for an on-line interview and the final selection is based on interview performance.

Applying does not automatically guarantee that a candidate will be shortlisted for an interview. The respective departments may use additional criteria (based on academic performance and/ or performance in the national level tests) to shortlist candidates for interviews. In addition, the chemistry department may have different internal shortlisting criteria for different branches of chemistry.

Fellowship

Upon selection and subsequently joining the Ph.D. program, candidates who do not possess any CSIR, DBT and INSPIRE, will be eligible for institute fellowship at par with CSIR, DBT, etc. as per the Institute norms.
