About the Theme
In the fifth Sustainable Devolvement Goal, the United Nations posits, “Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.” However, we are still in the process to achieve this goal as elements of patriarchal domination have proven to be resilient despite efforts for equality.
Sexually Gender-based Violence (SGBV), according to World Bank, is “a global pandemic that affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime”. Providing psychosocial support is crucial as numerous studies revealed that persons who grow up in violence have a high tendency to become survivors or perpetrators themselves in the future. Another salient feature of SGBV is that it goes beyond socio-economic stratifications and has been a problem for both developed and developing countries. Thus, we need to explore multi-pronged and comprehensive solutions to this issue, and one of these is through psychosocial intervention.
Now, more than ever, is the time that we should work for a world that is founded in mutual respect of all genders across the spectrum. Finally, it is a crucial moment to mainstream the “otherized” genders and write “her story” in history.
About the Speaker
- Ms. Angel Yinkore is a consultant psychologist who offers therapeutic services to companies and their employees. She specializes in trauma therapy and behavior management. In her spare time, she volunteers as a counseling psychologist in mental health organisations such as Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) and Stand To End Rape (STER).
- In the latter, she is the Head of Department of the Mental Health And Psychosocial services (MHPSS) department, which deals with providing therapy for survivors of sexual abuse. She leads the first group therapy project in Lagos for STER which was aimed at creating a community for survivors of sexual violence. Angel is a speaker, she has spoken on radio shows, TV shows and is a two-time TedX speaker.
- She’s also the founder of the Just Us Girls virtual therapy group program which is aimed at empowering young Nigerian women by focusing on their mental health and its impact in their day to day lives.
