About
The Department of Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar is organizing an Online Course on Remote-Sensing Applications in Groundwater Extraction Measurements from January 11 to 16, 2021.
National Institute of Technology Srinagar (NIT Srinagar or NITSRI) is a public technical university located in Srinagar, Jammu, and Kashmir, India. It is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and as such is directly under the control of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
It was established in 1960 as one of several Regional Engineering Colleges established as part of the Second Five Year Plan (1956–61) by the Government of India. It is governed by the National Institutes of Technology Act, 2007 which has declared it as Institute of National Importance.
Course Objectives
Excess groundwater extraction in many regions over the world has resulted in significant land surface subsidence. Radar imagery of the ground surface makes it possible to estimate the land subsidence between any two time-instances. In recent years, the abundance of freely available satellite imagery has garnered renewed interest in measuring and monitoring land-surface subsidence. There are, however, many technical concepts that need to be well-understood for accurately utilizing the remotely sensed images to groundwater-related subsidence.
In the short-term course, the most pertinent concepts related to land subsidence, groundwater extraction theory, and remote sensing of the ground surface shall be discussed. The vision of the course is to achieve a state-of-the-art understanding of groundwater extraction-related land surface subsidence and permanent losses of groundwater resources.
Topics
- Fundamental Remote Sensing Concepts.
- Groundwater Resources
- Groundwater Extraction
- Remote – Sensing Based Measurements of Groundwater Resource
- Land subsidence and Permanent groundwater losses
