About the Organisers

The Commonwealth Foundation is an international organization established by Heads of Government, an agency for civil society; a unique, stand-alone organization established by, funded and reporting to governments. The Foundation is dedicated to strengthening people’s participation in all aspects of public dialogue, to act together and learn from each other to build democratic societies.

About the Competition

Commonwealth Writers is the cultural initiative of the Commonwealth Foundation. It was set up in 2012 to inspire and connect writers and storytellers across the world. We believe that well-told stories can help people make sense of events, engage with others and take action to bring about change.
The Commonwealth Short Story Prize aims to identify talented writers who go on to inspire their communities. It unearths and promotes the best new writing from across the Commonwealth, developing literary connections worldwide.

Eligibility

Entrants must be citizens of a Commonwealth country and must be aged 18 years or over on 1st November 2018.

Topics

The story should be adult fiction and must not have been written for children alone. There are no restrictions on setting, genre or theme.

Prizes

There will be five winners, one from each region (Africa, Asia, Canada, and Europe, Caribbean, Pacific).
One regional winner will be selected as the overall winner. The overall winner of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize will receive £5,000 and the remaining four regional winners £2,500.

Submission Guidelines

Entries must be 2,000 words minimum, 5,000 words maximum.

Entries should be submitted in English, with the following exceptions: entries from Commonwealth citizens who write in Bengali, Chinese, Kiswahili, Malay, Portuguese, Samoan and Tamil and who do not have an English translation of their story, may submit their stories in the original language.

The last date for submission is 1st November.

The competition is free to enter.
